Today Jacee worked at the Everybody Plays Camp. This is a day camp sponsored by San Francisco Rec & Park for children with developmental disabilities as well as their siblings and friends. It was held at Douglass Park, which has both a children’s playground and a fenced dog park.
Jacee helped some of the kids overcome their fear of dogs. One girl initially wanted nothing to do with Jacee. We asked her to give Jacee some commands (sit, down, stand, roll) from a distance, and the girl was delighted when Jacee obeyed her. She was then willing to pet Jacee’s back when others kept Jacee’s nose out of her way. This progressed to her giving Jacee a tummy rub. Finally she allowed Jacee to sniff and kiss her hand.
Afterwards, many of the kids played fetch with Jacee in the dog park. Everyone had a great time.
When it was time to go home, we were presented with a thank you card signed by the staff and children.
